Established in April 1991, Columbia Evangelical Seminary's purpose was to provide enriching biblical, ministerial, and theological training and education. Many people, in all age groups, desired to earn college degrees but were hindered because they were fully engaged in ministry or some other occupation.

CES was established to reach this segment of adult learners, those who cannot afford to leave their job to live on a college campus for several years. Therefore, the curriculum was been designed for self-paced learning by Mentorship Study. All course work could be accomplished entirely by Mentorship Study and through the extension mode.

CES began the teach-out process of closing the school in 2022.
